Course Overview

This course assumes no prior knowledge or experience in the field of Obsolescence Management, or Engineering in general. It is expected that students will have pass grades at GCSE (or international equivalent) in Maths and English.
The course will be delivered in English.
No pre-course background reading is required.
The course will be administered online via a series of incremental modules delivered over 3 days and facilitated by a highly experienced IIOM endorsed trainer. The instructor will encourage attendees to contribute to the course through facilitated class discussions which do not require prior knowledge of Obsolescence Management. In addition, there will be practical exercises, illustrative examples, a final multiple-choice examination, and a post-course assessed project which will contribute to the pass mark that is necessary to obtain a course certificate which can subsequently be presented to IIOM for membership at the Associate level.

Course Structure and Content

The course will take place over 3 days which will include the final examination. The 11 Modules are each of approximately 1 hour duration with some having class exercises which may extend the sessions. There are breaks in between each session. There will be no formal ‘home-work’ during the course, but candidates will be encouraged to review the day’s presentations.
The course is structured around answering a series of questions which a person new to the subject might ask. These are:

Module 1 – Introduction – Why am I here?
Module 2 – What is Obsolescence? Why bother doing anything about it?
Module 3 – What Causes Obsolescence?
Module 4 – Mitigations and Resolutions – What can we do to solve Obsolescence issues?
Module 5 – The Wonderful World of Counterfeits – How obsolescence encourages the sale of counterfeit components and what can be done to avoid them.
Module 6 – Strategies – ‘What we are going to do and why we are going to do it?’
Module 7 – Process – How we are going to do it?
Module 8 – Software Obsolescence – How it arises and what can we do about it?
Module 9 – Obsolescence Management Plan – How are we going to construct it?
Module 10 – Contracting – Can we get someone else to do the hard work for us?
Module 11 – Justification – How can we show that we are cost-effective?

Course Location

The course will be conducted online so you will need access to a PC/laptop with reliable internet connection together with speakers or headphones, a microphone, a webcam, an up-to-date internet browser and access to email in order to activate your invitation to join the virtual classroom.

Course Assessment

The end of course examination will take the form of a 60-question multiple-choice exam with a time limit of 1 hour. This will be an online ‘open-book’ exam with access to reference material being allowed.

The Post Course Project

The project will require the candidate to produce, within 6 months of course completion, a piece of work based on the course content. This will require the candidate to use information gained during the course to produce a document which complies with the International Standard IEC 62402:2019, and demonstrates their knowledge and understanding of the subject and an ability to put Obsolescence Management into practice. This will be assessed as either ‘satisfactory’ or ‘not satisfactory’.

Pass Criteria

In order to qualify for IIOM membership at Associate level, students will be required to achieve 80% (48/60) in the exam and an assessment of ‘satisfactory’ for the post-course project. In the event that a student fails the exam, then they are allowed one more attempt before having to re-sit the course. Feedback will be provided regarding the questions that they answered incorrectly, including any common errors or where these pertained to a particular Module or subject matter. The re-sit would take place immediately once the exam result is declared and will be from a different selection of questions. If the student fails the exam for a second time, then they will be required to re-sit the course and exam at a future date (the cost of this would be £1,000 plus VAT). If a student receives a mark of ‘unsatisfactory’ on the Course Project, then further reviews are charged at £50 each until a ‘satisfactory’ mark is achieved. Guidance from the reviewer will be provided for each review
