At CMCA(UK), we have our own in-house solderability testing capability, which is set up within its own designated test area, allowing our experienced technicians to carry out tests on both leaded and lead-free components. This then provides our customers with the detailed information they require to be able to make an informed decision based on the analytic output. For instance, if a fail occurs or an issue is identified, the customer can make the decision to return the batch of components to the manufacturer/distributor for replacement, or alternatively have them re-passivated.
Surface mounted technology places a greater requirement for good solderability.
CMCA(UK) use a GEN3 Multicore Universal Solderability Tester (MUST3), providing quantitative and graphical results of a component’s solderability, and wetting and de-wetting times.
Tested to international standards IEC 60068-2-54 and IEC 60068-2-69, amongst others.

Some metallic surfaces are soldered more easily than others, with speed of wetting and adhesion of solder to surface being vital. Storage conditions are crucial too, as the wrong environment may cause issues in the solderability meeting current standards. CMCA(UK) can carry out periodic tests on components which have been stored within our Long Term Climate Controlled Store, giving the customer peace of mind on the condition of their components.
If a component or board doesn‘t solder properly, then it can lead to equipment failure, and subsequent customer returns and support issues.
CMCA(UK) can use the solderability test method in conjunction with our other in-house test capabilities, such as XRF testing, to create a bespoke test program for our customers.
